Deconstructing guru culture

A recording from Nancy Norbeck's live video

Thank you Kim Brassor, Amber Campbell, Jamie, and many others for tuning in to my live video!

A couple of quick notes:

  1. This topic is outside of what I normally discuss here, but I think it’s an important one. If it’s not for you, no worries. Feel free to skip it.

  2. I’m still not an expert on any of this. I think it’s really important to ask a lot of questions and look at the situation with a very critical lens, though.

  3. I said in this conversation that I felt “called” to host this session. It was the best word I had in that moment, but it’s niggling at me, because it’s not a good one. (It feels really culty!) We need a better one. A better way to describe it is that the idea got hold of me and wouldn’t let go, and folks encouraged me to go ahead, even though I was nervous about it—so I did.

Books I mentioned:

The Culting of America: What Makes a Cult and Why We Love Them, by Daniella Mestyanek Young

Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism, by Amanda Montell

Bright-Sided: How Positive Thinking Is Undermining America, by Barbara Ehrenreich

We discussed the idea of having a book group to discuss any of these books, or just a discussion group for a more interactive conversation about the questions we raised. If you’re interested, leave a comment below or reply to this message to let me know. (If you have a preference, please specify.)
