Narrative in Medicine and Fiction with Dr. David Weill
The importance of play and "Bend, don't break"
This week on the podcast, I’m talking with writer and retired transplant surgeon Dr. David Weill.
David is the former director of the Center for Advanced Lung Disease and Lung and Heart-Lung Transplant Program at Stanford University Medical Center. He’s now moved into consulting and has written two books—a memoir, Exhale: Hope, Healing, and a Life in Transplant, and his new novel, All That Really Matters. He talks with me about the ways fiction frees him to tell the truth about the sometimes cruel realities of the transplant world, how he shifted from surgery to writing, the emotional challenges of working in transplant, and more.
