Each night we go to sleep in faith that we will wake the next morning. Each morning we wake in faith that we will make it to the next night. There is no guarantee. In between we face innumerable challenges. The ones we see and the ones we do not. How many cars almost hit us —but don't? How many involuntary biological processes succeed where they might fail? We are oblivious. We think we are invincible as we stumble through this life this world this dream believing we are in control. We are not. We only think we are— granted the grace of the illusion.
The choice we make each day whether we know it or not: be brave and curious or fearful and suspicious. This choice creates our world. One opens to possibility. The other closes us off. Humans cannot be curious and afraid simultaneously. It is literally not possible. We must choose. Choose consciously. Choose wisely. —NN, 9 November 2024
We must be brave and curious, not fearful and suspicious.
Eddie Izzard, September 14, 2023
I sat in a theater in Philadelphia a little year ago and heard one of the wisest humans on the planet say these words, and knew I had to get them down in my phone in that dark room before I forgot them.
They feel even wiser today.
How are you choosing, and why? Let us know in a comment below.
I confess to choosing non-action over the last week, but I can feel a willingness to take a peek at new events and opportunities. Brave and curious is arising . Thank you for naming it! 🥰❤️
I too admire Eddie Izzard as well as his trans? identity. Thank you for this poem. I am trying to remain curious and open. Sometimes fear stalks me and temporarily wins but I will not let it take me over for long.
